Seven stair towers in the SUNY Stony Brook University Hospital parking structure posed a safety issue due to highly deteriorated concrete conditions.
Originally the plan was to perform localized concrete repairs.
STRUCTURAL educated the client on an alternative approach – a full replacement. This repair method would provide a long-term, lower-cost solution.
Project Overview
Seven stair towers in the SUNY Stony Brook University Hospital parking structure posed a safety issue due to highly deteriorated concrete conditions.
Originally the plan was to perform localized concrete repairs.
STRUCTURAL educated the client on an alternative approach – a full replacement. This repair method would provide a long-term, lower-cost solution. Ultimately the client agreed with STRUCTURAL that the best approach was to demolish the stairwells and install new metal pan stair towers.
STRUCTURAL demoed the stairwell working from top to bottom and shored the stair towers for easy access and safety. A steel contractor fabricated the steel pieces that were then installed within a week. Concrete was poured into the metal pans to complete the repairs. At a minimum, five stairwells were always open to ensure there were multiple egresses to and from the parking structure.
