The Southwest Florida Water Management District plays a vital role in managing and protecting the region’s water resources by balancing flood control, water supply, and water quality. One of its key flood protection structures—a concrete dam— had deteriorated due to age and exposure to a harsh marine environment.

STRUCTURAL was contracted to perform proactive repairs to extend the dam’s service life. Work spanned above, within, and below the waterline, each requiring specialized techniques. The comprehensive scope included concrete repairs, sealant application, installation of a distributed galvanic anode system for corrosion mitigation, and underwater mounting of stainless-steel bulk anode brackets.

Construction was significantly delayed by two hurricanes and a tropical storm, which brought record rainfall and flooding, halting in-water work for months. Storm-driven shear forces also caused failure of the original non-metallic anchors. The team responded with a retrofit solution using metal expansion anchors and remounted the brackets once conditions stabilized.

Despite extreme weather challenges, STRUCTURAL successfully completed the repairs, strengthening the dam and reinforcing flood protection for the surrounding communities.
