A leading East Coast rail freight provider experienced a major disruption when an unexpected explosion from methane build-up damaged a reinforced concrete tunnel within their coal storage system. The incident severely impacted logistics and operations, necessitating urgent repairs.
The Owner was constructing a new reinforced concrete roof for the tunnel but needed specialized expertise for the concrete repairs. Having previously delivered successful outcomes on similar projects for the Owner, STRUCTURAL was selected for this task.
STRUCTURAL executed comprehensive repairs, including horizontal and vertical epoxy crack injections, partial-depth concrete repairs, and expansion joint repairs. Coordinating these repairs with the concurrent construction of the new tunnel roof, communication and collaboration were crucial.
STRUCTURAL’s portion of the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, helping the timely restoration of this vital coal storage tunnel to resume coal transportation activities.
