Proactive Concrete Protection During Plant Expansion
- Proactive program utilizes protective coatings on new concrete
- Coating/liner plan included protection of secondary containment areas
- Epoxy coating systems utilized for long-term protection
- Location: United States
- Specialty Contractor: STRUCTURAL
A chemical plant was undergoing an expansion project at its facility. The expansion included large areas of concrete flooring and secondary containment units that would be exposed to highly corrosive environments. Understanding the consequences of deterioration, the owner took the proactive step of creating a protection plan for its infrastructure during initial construction.
STRUCTURAL was selected to be part of the project team and recommended a concrete coating to increase the safety, durability and reliability of the concrete floors. The surfaces were acid-proofed, primed and coated with 3 layers of an epoxy resin coating system that covered 10,000SFH. The secondary containment areas utilized chemical resistant coatings and trenches. The trench systems were made of pre-fabricated fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) to prevent deterioration covering 400+LF. Repairs were completed in 2 months.
